Because flying is fun by Blue-Uncia Because flying is fun by Blue-Uncia

Photoshop and drawingtablet

So I decided to join this month's =ShinXChange again. This month I got to draw *danji-isthmus' dragon Lano. From what I gather, Lano is a kind, but rather shy kelp-eating beastie. His design was rather complicated, though. I hope I got it right. I'm quite pleased with the way the background looks.
By the way, this month's exchange theme was 'color'. Now I tried to keep a rather limited palette, and to just stick to one or two main colors, but I don't think that I managed to quite pull it off. And on top of that, we were also supposed to hold our trades until December 25th, but... I just can't sit on my pictures. I hope Shin doesn't mind me uploading it early anyway. Sorry Shin! XD

I don't think Shin will mind :D

The way you tilted the background--it really gives the sensation of flying! I've never seen that done before, it's a very nice touch.

Oh, tilted backgrounds aren't really THAT unusual, but thanks! I kind of stole it from mangas, because it's a popular way to make a scene more dramatic. ;)

They hardly air anime here in Holland anymore either. And when they do, it's kiddy junk. The most mature thing on tv here is Pokémon. -_-'

And of course I also watch Avatar on occassion, but some people say that that's technically a cartoon, because it wasn't made in Japan. But whatever...

No, I get my fix by buying mangas. :D

ooo I love the lighting! Sunrise/sets are always fantastic, I adore the setting and the way it all shimmers off that water, it all sets such a marvelous atmosphere.

The dragons design is certainly very cool, and judging by the other pictures of him around you've drawn him wonderfully! The pose is gorgeous, he looks exceptionally majestic with his the wings spanning top-bottom of the picture, and he's got a lovely cute expression, like he's having himself a lot of fun :D!

The limited palette is noticeable, I'm attracted to pieces which stick to strong lighting, high contrast, and fewer colours, and this encompasses that all very well; though I get the feeling it may have been more effective without the green... but that's really just nitpicking ;)!
You've done a fantastic job on this one!

Thank you! Like I said, I'm quite happy with that background too! :D

I think Lano IS having a lot of fun there. And thanks! That design was a bit of a pain to get down.

Heh, actually I hear it's natural for the human eye to be attracted to differences in light and dark and other such contrasts. We're just naturally attracted to them, because the eye basically works by determining the differences in light intensity. The most rudimentary eye in the animal kingdom (I think jellyfish have them) only distinguish light from dark.

So it's the most elementary task for an eye. Maybe that is why we humans still like contrasts so much. :D

As for the green... Yeah, maybe you're right. But then again, I wanted to throw in a slightly different color to show that I wasn't just applying some sort of filter or something. I wanted to show that although this dragon lives in a world as colorful as our own, right now there were only two truly dominant colors. You know?
Besides... I couldn't really bring myself to color the trees purple. XD

Thanks! Well, it's just that I didn't manage to stick to just one or two colors. I threw in some more, although I guess that was to be expected anyway. XD

Anyway, thanks for commenting. :)

A kelp eating dragon? That's different. The background is really cool, and Lano's design isn't like most dragons you see.

XD I love strange dragons or unusual designed characters ^^ Lano is definitely one of my fave characters ^^

You are the first one to draw him other than me or *elen89 so I am happy you got it ^^ Cause the picture I gave could have been really confusing ^^;

Lol. I feel that way about some of my own characters as well. ;)

Actually, your first pic was a little confusing to me at first. I thought it looked as if Lano had no hindlegs. But because you said that elen89 designed the dragon, I went over to her gallery and searched for it. [link] Found that pic by her, which was really very helpful. :D

Actually, it's rather funny. I already knew that artist's gallery and as it turns out, I actually even faved that pic of Lano, which she made for you. Faved it a few months ago. So to me, drawing your dragon was rather cool, because it was like stumbling upon a familiar face! XD

XD;;; Well I'm glad you went there. I even thought of adding it as a ref but you have to get permission from the artist and she's been busy lately ^^; So yay for watching the same person who made the original design ^^

Glad you feel that way ^^ It took me a few months to get myself to draw him cause I wanted to think of a good personality for him before I did ^^

I don't know if an artist can really object to you referring someone to their pictures (even if it is for reference purposes). If she could, then she shouldn't have put it on the internet in the first place, eh? XD But I understand your train of thought. ;)

Well, personally I rather like drawing friendly characters, so that turned out well then. :)

I think it's in the rules for the shinXchange that you have to have permission to use someone else pic of yer character for a ref. But yeah I know what you mean XD

That's cool ^^

Hmmm... I just checked the Exchange's rules, but I haven't found any rules about having to have permission to refer to other people's art...

There is on note of a participant, which Shin used as one of his examples. In this note the participant did say that an artist had given permission for being referred to. Although I guess that is a good and polite thing to do, I don't see why it would have to be mandatory. But maybe you should ask Shin. It might be a good addition to the FAQ. ;)
