So I finally drew one of my own original characters again, instead of somebody else's. I'm so proud of myself! It occurred to me that I haven't actually shown you guys a lot of my own characters yet. So far you've only seen the human SoL characters and Uncia, but there are actually a lot more OC's crawling around in my head. So I figured I really ought to show some of them.
So here's the first one - meet Featherfoot, the lesser gryphon. I made her up a few months ago, and decided to draw her when I stumbled upon ~KiyaraSabel's Gryphonic Descent Contest. Yes, it is another contest entry, but at least I'm entering an OC, so that's got to count for something, right?

Anyway, Featherfoot is a female lesser gryphon, a smaller sub-species of the regular gryphon. She's part snow leopard and part snow owl. A lesser gryphon is about the size of your average Golden Retriever and they're quite smart too. They're not social animals, but they do mate for life. Females are bigger than males and generally outlive them by roughly five to ten years. The average life expectancy of the lesser gryphon is forty to sixty years in the wild. It prefers to live in cold mountainous areas and obviously it's carnivorous. Like regular owls, lesser gryphons consume their prey completely - bones, fur, feathers and all. Unlike owls, lesser gryphons do not produce pellets. They have excellent eye sight and hearing, they can fly almost silently and are great jumpers too.
Their talons also work exactly like those of regular owls. When in rest, three toes will face forwards and one toe will face backwards. One of the forwards-facing toes has a flexible joint. When the animal is about to strike, this joint allows the toe to swivel backwards as depicted above.

Overall I'm quite happy with this picture, even though the wings did not come out the way I wanted. They were supposed to look more like real owl wings. These wings will never fly as silently as an owl's will, but I'll just ignore it for now. I do really like the way the background looks. :)

Nicely done. Your idea of fusing an own and snow leopard turned out very well IMO, and your drawing is well detailed.
Tis good stuff :)

*gasp*

Wow, your gallery is fantastic, if you don't mind me being blunt! I think I only faved some of your work, which I saw in Akeli's faves. I should have clicked a little further to your own gallery. XD

It's late now, but tomorrow I'm going to go on a faving-spree, that much is for sure. :D

Heheheh. Well, feel free to have a go at her. I don't mind if people want to draw my characters.

In fact, I love it when people draw them in their own style! I'd certainly like to see it if you're done. ;)

Oh, and you're welcome, by the way. :D

It's so your styled! And i like it. :3 The pose is pretty interesting for both of them but something just isn't right about the wings. The feathers point so weird directions and they almost look more like fur. More practice for you with wings. =P But don't worry, i've seen worse and you are great artist anyway.

Thanks. And yes, the wings aren't right. I know. I've wrestled with them for ages, until I was finally sick of it. So I gave up on them. Still, I think they look better than the wings I used to draw a long time ago. I'll get there... eventually. ;)

hahaaa oh damn! that's awesome :D!!!

I love owls, they're so bad ass, and chucking them in together with a leopard only makes them that much cooler! The colours of those two mesh really well, this would be the first time I've seen someone base a Griffin on an owl, and it works really well :)

I really love how those wings look, coming forward at you like that, it's very powerful and menacing, the tangled mess of feathers on the left more specifically really plays up the ruthless deadly kinda element that makes owls so cool.

haha Poor little rabbit... no matter how fast it runs I think it really just has no chance against the Ms. Featherfoot. ~

Heheheheh. Thanks. You're always so enthusiastic. XD

I'm glad you like my little combination too. ;) I should point out though, that owl-based gryphons are actually quite common. I've seen quite a lot of them at any rate. And the snow owl - snow leopard combo isn't totally unique either, but that's ok. I still like Featherfoot. :)

The feathers and the wings... I actually don't really like them at all... They don't look anything like real owl wings and those tangled feathers are a nightmare... They'll never fly silently. XD
But some people here like them, while others don't. I don't hate them, but I do feel they could have been done better. Oh well, overall I am pleased with this picture. I even deviated from my usual super-duper bright colors too, so what's not to like about that, eh?

I feel sorry for the bunny too. It's going pretty fast, but it just doesn't seem like it'll make it. XD

Beautifully done, you did a great job sticking to the owl and snow leopard anatomy while still making a fantastic mythical creature! The thought you put into the species itself is very good, I like pictures with stories attached :D

I always liked pictures like that too. And thanks! I know the concept of sticking the snow owl and snow leopard together is not totally new (it's been done before), but still... I don't care. Featherfoot's my little girl. :D

Most art isn't "new"--it's how we make it our own that makes it orignal :)
