Photoshop tutorials: Grass tutorial 1: Using the grass brush July, 2009
Here's the grass tutorial I've been meaning to make for such a long time: a tutorial on the proper use of Photoshop's grass brushes. I've seen them being abused for so long, that I just couldn't take it any longer. For additional tips and information, please also check out these other tutorials:
Thanks a lot for this tutorial! I used the technique for my comic page [link] Since I didn't feel like spending several hours on every panel of grass it doesn't look nearly as refined as in your example but it's much better and faster than what I did before.
I used this tutorial to make my first background if you want to see it: [link]
I fell in love with it and made it into a background for my first two comic pages. I would love feedback seeing as this is my first actual background that I truly tried on, but only if you have time. It also took me less than 45 minutes to make it, ironically. I didn't know backgrounds were so easy to make.
I'd say maybe add some more blues and even some purples near the horizon, to suggest atmospheric perspective. Also make it a little lighter than the foreground. The moon could also do with a bit more definition, since it's a bit on the blurry side right now.
Other than that, it looks pretty good to me. A very respectable first attempt. Beats mine.
This helped me soooo much. If you want to see what I made with the help of your amazing tutorial, here it is: [link] Again, totally saved my horrible first handed backgrounds.
What a fantastic tutorial you've done here. You're right in saying that a tutorial on a grass brush seems a little silly at first but once you get in to seeing how bad it can go, you start to see why it's needed. Well done.
